Research and Development of Sustainable Urban Planning in Cauca (Popayán Case Study)

Summary

The procect seeks to contribute to innovation and sustainable development of the region, through the incorporation of new technologies in the study, visualization and modeling of the city by creating a technological package that contributes to sustainable urban planning processes of the city of Popayán and which can be replicated in intermediate cities and municipalities with less than 100-thousand inhabitants.
The technological package will be associated to a city model that contains the general guidelines that permit guiding the actions of territorial administrations and the citizenship in the construction of prosperous, innovative, and sustainable territories.
From the investigation results yielded by this project, we hope to generate a strategy of social appropriation of knowledge through art and design to transmit knowledge generated to the academic community, civil society, and government bodies.

Colegio Mayor del Cauca works for the consolidation of the culture for research through formative research, which includes research seeds and groups, integrating knowledge networks that work on projects applied to art, technology, social sciences and administration, permeating academic curricula with the formation of thought skills, like analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and action upon problems or concrete necessities, tending for the generation of critical and autonomous thought within the academic community.
Research constitutes the support for developing the mission and vision at the University Institution Colegio Mayor del Cauca, supported theoretically upon its Institutional Educational Project
Research, upon being considered a substantial function of formation, must be an articulating element among teaching, social projection and outreach, whenever through it we seek awareness of regional problems and the solutions posed. The level of development of the research policy at Colegio Mayor del Cauca will depend on the level of formation of the programs it offers.
Colegio Mayor del Cauca has a research system structured in network manner, which permits its members to interact flexibly, without losing their autonomy, but guiding their efforts toward a common purpose. Also, the system is open to society and interacts with other external systems with which it shares purpose.

Components

Research Committee. As executing body of the policies traced from the Academic Council, making decisions and formulating proposals within said institutional framework, as booster and facilitator of research processes.
Research Coordination. As organizing and channeling body of the dynamics proposed by the academic community on research issues.
Research Groups. As pillars of academic production, structurers of research programs and in charge of formulating and executing research projects. These groups sponsor seed researchers within the formation research process.
Research seeds. As dynamizers of autonomous and significant learning and generation change in research groups.
Academic Programs. As units for the culture of disciplinary knowledge, promoters of work and facilitators of research processes. The programs generate articulating spaces of the research dynamics with the rest of the curricular activities.
Curricular Committee. As motor of research processes in the classroom and outside articulating their dynamics to those of the Research Committee.
Social Projection Committee. As motor of research processes that impact upon the regional and national environment, articulating its dynamics to those of the Research Committee.
Network. As one of the administration and management pillars in the contemporary world where globality and competition demand pooling efforts between organizations and systems to accomplish a series of advantages against challenges from a changing and dynamic world. Networking in research implies articulating purposes and work plans between the research system at Colegio Mayor del Cauca and systems seeking similar purposes within the regional development framework, which would not be accomplished in isolated manner.
Administrative-financial Component. As that which manages resources, administers and invests existing resources seeking to keep the system from collapsing and making it operate correctly.
